I made a silly wordplay joke on Threads and it evolved into one of the most fun, energizing and possibly vital projects I’ve worked on in a while.

Some context:
I was releasing a single for my music project Kid Lightbulbs 2 months ago. The song is called “head on my heart”. I posted that I thought it would be funny if another musician active on Threads recorded a cover of it, and we’d call it “threads on my art” 🙄 🦗

Turns out a bunch of musician in my network took this as a serious call to action, and were inspired to cover a fellow artist’s work. It evolved totally organically – no advertising, no formal call for submissions, just a bunch of artists having fun online. I’ve never seen something come together like this before.

Two months later, and 13 fellow independent musicians have recorded 13 covers of Kid Lightbulbs songs across a number of genres and styles. They’re wildly impressive, too! It releases on July 19, and the proceeds will benefit a few charities that are important to me. I’ll post here when it goes live, and would appreciate if you’d check it out.

The takeaway? I don’t know. Something like: Being silly online is fun. Silly projects are fun. Organic community action at a small scale is vital, if anything to keep us energized and moving forward.
