INFINITE NORMAL track 3: “simple”

This one was fun to produce. It originates as 3 completely different song ideas, one from 2008, another from 2011; the chorus I wrote on-the-fly back in May when trying to wrangle ideas together for a high-energy song after the slow-burn-death-march of “i stood in the rain”.

The bassline is this wonky thing I tried writing a song around for my old prog-metal band originally in 5/8. It randomly resurfaced in my brain earlier this year and I tried a more modern post-punk take on it.

The breakdown section is a entirely different song I wrote in 2011, called “sabbatical”. In this context, it serves as a direct contrast to the hectic nature of the rest of the song. I made a few other versions of “sabbatical” over the years, here is one: https://buff.ly/gohN96B

Lyrically, the song is a dry take on ignorance = bliss. With all the hyper-awareness we all have to all the crazy & dark things happening throughout the world, sometimes I wonder whether I would be better off shutting myself out. Coming immediately after “rain” in the track sequence, it’s a reflection that pleading ignorance in itself involves a great deal of privilege. I think that’s why the vocals come off a bit sarcastic and deranged.
